Technology!
It is pretty much expected that today just about everyone that can afford a cell phone has one, unless they’re Amish or super old fashioned. It is no longer taboo to be in the middle of something and have your phone ring, and you answer it. Cell phones have connected people on a level we never have before. It is pretty much assumed that anyone that has a cell phone always has it on them, whether they’re out of town, at work, school, grocery shopping etc. It’s like there is no longer an assumption of any personal time because the reason you have a cell phone is to be able to be reached. Acceptable communication behaviors are changing. In the last few years in school you would have your cell phone taken until then end of class if you were caught texting. Today from personal experience teachers either don’t mind anymore, have given up, or they just act like they saw nothing. Also it used to be considered rude and unacceptable to answer your phone during dinner. That is no longer really the case, even when eating with the family people tend to answer their phones whenever they ring.
There is a definite negative side to having cell phones though. Since you have a phone to be able to be reached at any time people get irritated and think you’re ignoring them if you don’t answer. Even if you legitimately weren’t able to answer their call and you forget to call them back it can defiantly cause relationship problems.
